Finding Our Fathers: A DNA Journey to Identity and Healing was a special Zoom event focused on the intersection of father-loss, DNA discovery, and the lifelong search for belonging. Co-hosted by The Man In Me and DiscoverFamily.net, this virtual conversation created space for honest reflection, powerful storytelling, and the reminder that identity matters at every stage of life.

If you weren’t able to join us live, you can still watch the full replay here:
📺 Watch on YouTube

The event featured DiscoverFamily.net founder Troy Olson and Jason Timmons of The Man In Me, both of whom brought not only professional insight, but personal experience to the table. Together, they explored how the absence of a biological father can shape a man’s sense of self—and how DNA testing and family discovery can open doors to healing.

Throughout the event, attendees heard real stories of search and discovery: men who spent decades without answers, only to find clarity through ancestry research and the support of others who had walked similar paths. For some, the outcome was reunion. For others, it was finally understanding the truth. In every case, it was a step toward wholeness.

At DiscoverFamily.net, we see this every day.

Our team of volunteer Search Angels helps individuals uncover the truth about their biological roots—often when all they have are fragments of a story. Using DNA results, public records, and years of investigative experience, we help people find the missing pieces of their family puzzle with care, respect, and confidentiality.

Finding Our Fathers was a powerful reminder that no one should have to walk this road alone. Whether you’re looking for your biological father, supporting a loved one, or simply curious about your origins, there’s a place for you here.

If you’re ready to take the first step—or even just ask a few questions—please reach out. Our team is honored to walk with you.

A Beacon of Hope for Adoptees and Birth Families

The journey of adoption is often a complex and emotional path, both for adoptees and birth families. One vital tool in bridging the gap between adoptees and their biological families is the reunion registry. This system offers a structured and confidential way for individuals to express their interest in reconnecting with lost family members. In this blog post, we will explore what a reunion registry is, how it works, and its significance for adoptees and birth families.

What is a Reunion Registry?

A reunion registry is a system that allows adoptees and birth families to register their desire to be reunited. These registries are typically maintained by adoption agencies, government bodies, or independent organizations dedicated to supporting the adoption community. The primary purpose of a reunion registry is to provide a safe and confidential platform where both parties can indicate their willingness to reconnect.

When an adoptee or a birth family member registers, they provide identifying information and express their interest in a reunion. If a match is found—meaning both parties have registered and indicated a desire to reunite—the registry facilitates the connection, often through a mediator or counselor.

The Significance of Reunion Registries for Adoptees

For adoptees, the quest to understand their origins and reconnect with their birth families can be an essential part of their identity formation. Here are some key reasons why reunion registries are significant for adoptees:

Closure and Understanding: Many adoptees have questions about their origins, health history, and the circumstances of their adoption. A reunion can provide the answers and closure they seek, helping them to better understand their identity and personal history.

Emotional Healing: The process of reunion can be deeply healing for adoptees. It allows them to address feelings of abandonment or loss and build new, meaningful relationships with their birth families.

Medical Information: Access to medical history is a crucial benefit of reunion registries. Adoptees often lack important information about their genetic health, which can be vital for their well-being and that of their descendants.

Building Relationships: Reuniting with birth families provides an opportunity to build relationships that adoptees might have longed for throughout their lives. This can create a sense of belonging and connection that is deeply fulfilling.

The Role of Reunion Registries for Birth Families

Birth families, too, benefit significantly from reunion registries. The decision to place a child for adoption is often accompanied by a lifetime of wondering about their well-being and happiness. Here’s why reunion registries are vital for birth families:

Peace of Mind: Birth parents often experience a profound sense of loss and worry about the child they placed for adoption. Knowing that the adoptee is interested in reconnecting can provide immense peace of mind.

Emotional Resolution: Reuniting with an adoptee can offer birth families emotional resolution and healing. It allows them to share their stories, express their feelings, and possibly build a new relationship with the adoptee.

Sharing Information: Birth families can provide adoptees with crucial information about their genetic background, family history, and cultural heritage, enriching the adoptee’s sense of identity.

Rebuilding Connections: For siblings and extended family members, reunion registries offer a chance to reconnect and build familial relationships that were interrupted by the adoption process.

How to Use a Reunion Registry in Your Search

If you’re an adoptee or a birth family member considering a reunion registry, here are some steps to guide you through the process:

Research Registries: Start by researching reunion registries. Look for reputable ones that are well-maintained and have a good track record. Some registries are run by adoption agencies, while others are managed by government bodies or independent organizations.

Register Your Information: Provide as much identifying information as you can. This might include your birth name, date of birth, place of birth, and any other relevant details. Be honest and thorough to increase the chances of a successful match.

Express Your Intentions: Clearly indicate your desire for a reunion. This is a critical part of the registration process, as it signals your willingness to reconnect with your birth family.

Stay Updated: Keep your contact information up to date. If you move or change phone numbers, make sure the registry has your current details so they can reach you if a match is found.

Be Patient: The process of finding a match can take time. It’s important to be patient and maintain hope. Remember, reunion is a deeply personal journey, and it happens at its own pace.

The Role of DiscoverFamily.net in Your Search

At Discover Family, we understand the emotional complexities and profound significance of reuniting with birth families.
For many adoptees, the quest to uncover their roots and connect with their biological family is a deeply personal and emotional journey. At the heart of this search often lies a critical document: the Original Birth Certificate (OBC). In this blog post, we’ll explore what an OBC is, why it’s important to adoptees, and how it can aid in the search for birth families.

What is an Original Birth Certificate (OBC)?

An Original Birth Certificate (OBC) is the birth record that is created at the time of a child’s birth. This document typically includes vital information such as the names of the birth parents, the date and place of birth, and the name given to the child at birth. For adoptees, the OBC is often replaced by an Amended Birth Certificate (ABC) after the adoption is finalized. The ABC lists the adoptive parents as the legal parents and may also change the child’s name.

Why is the OBC Important to Adoptees?

For many adoptees, the OBC holds the key to their biological heritage. Here are a few reasons why it is so significant:

Identity and Heritage: Knowing the names of biological parents and understanding one’s heritage can provide a sense of identity and belonging that many adoptees crave.

Medical History: The OBC can be the first step in discovering a full medical history. Understanding hereditary conditions or health issues can be crucial for an adoptee’s well-being.

Closure and Connection: For some, having access to the OBC offers closure to lingering questions about their origins. It can also open the door to forming connections with biological family members.

How Can the OBC Aid in the Search for Birth Family?

The information contained in an OBC is invaluable when searching for birth families. Here’s how it can help:

Identifying Birth Parents: The names of the birth parents listed on the OBC provide a starting point for searching through public records, social media, and other databases.

Geographical Clues: The place of birth listed on the OBC can help narrow down the search area, making it easier to locate birth families.

Additional Records: The OBC can lead to other important documents, such as birth certificates of siblings, marriage certificates of birth parents, and more, each piece of information bringing the adoptee closer to their biological family.

Challenges in Accessing the OBC

Despite its importance, obtaining an OBC can be challenging due to varying state laws and regulations regarding sealed records. In many states, OBCs are sealed once an adoption is finalized and can only be accessed through a court order or special legislation. However, some states have more lenient laws allowing adoptees easier access to their original birth records.

How DiscoverFamily.net Can Help

At DiscoverFamily.net, we understand the complexities and emotional aspects of searching for biological family members. If you’re an adoptee searching for your birth family, know that you don’t have to navigate this journey alone. At Discover Family we are committed to helping during this part of your journey.
At DiscoverFamily.net, we uphold the highest standards of ethical search practices in our mission to reunite adoptees with their birth families. For adoptees navigating the complexities of searching for birth parents, ethical considerations are paramount. In this blog post, we’ll explore what ethical search practices entail and why they matter to adoptees.

Understanding Ethical Search Practices:

Ethical search practices encompass a set of principles and guidelines designed to ensure that the search process is conducted with integrity, respect, and sensitivity towards all parties involved. This includes adoptees, birth parents, adoptive families, and any other individuals impacted by the search and reunion process. Ethical search practices prioritize the well-being and autonomy of all individuals, while also recognizing the complexity and emotional significance of reunion.

Why Ethical Search Practices Matter:

Ethical search practices are essential for adoptees seeking to reconnect with their birth parents in a responsible and ethical manner. By adhering to ethical guidelines, adoptees can minimize potential harm, avoid unintended consequences, and preserve the dignity and privacy of all parties involved. Ethical search practices also promote transparency, honesty, and trust, fostering positive and sustainable relationships between adoptees and their birth families.

Ethical Search Strategies: Our team employs ethical search strategies and techniques to maximize the likelihood of successful reunion while minimizing potential risks and negative outcomes. We prioritize open communication, informed consent, and mutual respect throughout the search process, ensuring that adoptees feel empowered and supported every step of the way.

Sensitivity and Compassion: We approach each search with sensitivity and compassion, recognizing the emotional complexity and significance of reunion for adoptees and their birth families. We provide a safe and supportive environment for adoptees to express their feelings, fears, and hopes, offering empathetic guidance and encouragement throughout their journey.

Respect for Privacy: We respect the privacy and autonomy of all individuals involved in the search and reunion process. We adhere to strict confidentiality protocols and ethical standards, safeguarding sensitive information and ensuring that adoptees’ privacy rights are protected at all times.
